Plan Your Retaining Wall:
- Determine the purpose and location of the retaining wall. Consider factors like the height, length, and slope of the area.

- Materials typically include concrete blocks or poured concrete, gravel, rebar, concrete mix, adhesive, and drainage fabric.
- Tools may include a shovel, wheelbarrow, tape measure, level, mason’s line, stakes, string, a hammer, a handsaw or circular saw, and safety equipment.
- Excavate the area where you intend to build the retaining wall. Dig a trench for the base and provide space for the wall’s height and thickness.
- Make sure the trench is level and compact the soil at the bottom.
Install the Base Course:
- Place a layer of gravel or crushed stone in the trench and compact it to create a level, stable base.
- Lay the first course of concrete blocks or forms on the gravel, ensuring they are level and well-aligned.
Build the Wall:
- Continue adding courses of blocks or pouring concrete. Use a level to check for horizontal and vertical alignment.
- Stagger the joints between blocks or forms for stability and strength.
- Insert rebar in the cells of the blocks or in the poured concrete to reinforce the wall, especially for taller walls.
Create Drainage and Backfill:
- Lay drainage fabric behind the wall to allow water to escape without causing pressure.
- Backfill behind the wall with gravel or crushed stone to help with drainage and provide stability.
Finish the Surface:
- Clean the concrete blocks or wall surface and ensure it’s free of excess mortar.
- If desired, you can paint or stain the retaining wall to improve its appearance.
Final Inspection:
- Check the retaining wall for any alignment or stability issues.
- Inspect for proper drainage, especially if the wall is retaining soil or water.
